Mother of the bride accessories guide

For those of us who enjoy dressing up, there’s nothing more exciting than a wedding.  This is amplied even more for a mother of the bride or groom who will share the happy couple’s spotlight on the big day.  But, does this formal occasion mean an identikit wedding outfit is obligatory?  Of course not!  For style conscious mothers of the bride or groom wedding dressing is a chance to revel.  Whether sophisticated, eclectic, bold or minimalist, it’s a chance to feel confident in a showstopping look that is completely your own.

But how to do this?  We always recommend spending time choosing the right accessories, as this is what will set your outfit apart.

So, we asked Dee, our Occasion Wear Advisor to give us her TOP 5 TIPS in this Mother of the Bride Accessories Guide…

1) Make accessories your ‘headline’
If creating an individual look is very important to you, keep your outfit simple and invest in statement shoes, bag and jewellery to make an impact.

2) Be guided by the dress code
Formal evening affair, or pool-side cocktails?  Before you consider the accessories you choose, and the overall look you want to create, first understand the dress code.  You want to be individual, but never inappropriate!

3) Blend…don’t match
Mr & Mrs to-be will probably have a colour scheme for their wedding day.  This will include the shades of floral arrangements, bridesmaids, men’s ties, invitations, and perhaps even the wedding dress (if the bride is not wearing traditional white).  Discuss your intended outfit before hand, and ensure that you blend with the shade tones, and fabrics of the wedding…but don’t look like an extra bridesmaid.  You’ll feel co-ordinated with the wedding party, and this will look beautiful in the photography of the event.

4) Consider comfort
Confidence in your look is as much to do with comfort, as it is indivdual style.  Make sure you invest in your shoes, and consider a designer such as Lisa Kay.  Her collection is always a favourite in store amongst mothers of the bride and groom, as it mixed exquisite style with soft, cushioned comfort. We always have jewelled flats too, perfect if you want a glam change of shoes for when the dancing starts!

5) It’s a wrap!
So many of the designers we stock in our occasion wear department now design bolero jackets, long line jackets or shrugs.  This is incredibly well received by our clients, as many of our mothers of the bride and groom would like the option to cover their arms.  The added bonus with an investment in this kind of accessory is that you can often wear it again at a later date.

Dee, Fashion Advisor at N.Shelley says, “Mothers or the bride & groom want to dress for the occasion, but they also want to maintain a sense of indivdual style.  Statement shoes & handbag or jewellery is often the easiest way to achieve both”.
